Patrizi’s Dinner Nights at the Vortex

6 p.m. Wednesday. Patrizi’s at the Vortex, 2307 Manor Road. Cost varies. www.facebook.com/events/710774982267943.

The Italian food trailer that has been serving dinner for Vortex theater-goers and others in East Austin is now offering a weekly Wednesday meal that won’t feature anything from the regular menu. The dinners change from week to week — meaning that one day you might be in for a formal six-course meal; on another Wednesday, you might sit down for a pig roast or an oyster bake. — Ari Auber

Romance...East Austin Style

February 2014

THE VORTEX:

Right down the street is The Vortex, an Edgy and Quirky  theatre on the East Side.  The talented writers, actors, and actresses consistently bring productions to this intimate theatre which make audiences smile and laugh.  Their indoor theater is quaint and intimate, and they also have an outdoor stage for productions.

TIP:  Parking lot available.  Additional parking at Home Steam Cleaners and Clean Sweep after 7pm.

BUTTERFLY BAR:

Inside the Vortex Theater is the Butterfly Bar, a casual East Austin hang out with an intimate bar and outside patio.  Almost nightly, the bar has an event or live music to enjoy while drinking local beer such as Independence Stash IPA, wine or specialty cocktails.

TIPS:  Open daily from 5pm-midnight, 1am on Saturdays.

PATRIZI’S:

Parked behind The Vortex Theater is a family owned and operated Italian food truck, called Patrizi’s.  With over 50 years of experience, Nic Patrizi brings delicious Italian food to Austin. After a full night of fun, a late night snack of pasta, or dessert sounds like the perfect way to end a romantic evening…East Side style.

TIP: Open 7 days a week, with same hours as the bar.  Patrizi’s host a 2 or 4 course Prix Fixe dinner, community style including Feb 5, 12, 19 and 26.

Attire: Festive. Crazy hats recommended for The Madhatter’s Faery Tea Party on Saturday at 5pm.

25 years ago, in January of 1989, VORTEX produced its first show, The Angels are Waiting, at Mexic-Arte Museum in downtown Austin. Two venues, tens of thousands of artists and audiences, hundreds of opening nights and strikes, more than 100 B. Iden Payne Awards, 23 City of Austin Contracts and Texas Commission on the Arts Grants, 4 National Endowment for the Arts grants, dozens of weddings, births, deaths, and 25 revolutions around the Sun later, we are celebrating with a 2-night Birthday Gala. Join us for one hour or all 14 hours! There may never be another party like this one, so be sure to stop by.

We are especially excited about the photo and video montages showing the wide range of our 25-year history. Many of these photos have never been seen before—spectacular production photos from Bonnie Cullum’s slides from 1989-2008 when we went digital. Most of the videos have been recently transferred from VHS and while we will be slowly building an online archive, this is your first opportunity to see the arch of our work.

For the kids--Saturday, January 11 from 5-7 as The Madhatter’s Faery Tea Party takes over The Butterfly Bar—for children of all ages. Wear your maddest hat or faery wings. We really love of all of the children of The VORTEX, and hope to see a lot of proud parents in hats too.

Featured performances of theatre, music, and dance over two nights by VORTEX veterans include Toni Bravo, Heather Barfield, Matthew Patterson, Chad Salvata, Zell Miller III, Gabriel Maldonado, Content Love Knowles, Ann Marie Gordon, Melissa Vogt-Patterson, Betsy McCann, Anderson Dear, Chris Humphrey, Mindy Rast-Keenan, Betsy McCann, Mick D’arcy, Rudy Ramirez, Chelsea Mannasseri, Jonathan Itchon, Laura Ray, Talena Martinez, Justin LaVergne, Aisha Melhem, Jennifer Coy, Jenny Lavery, Kylie Baker, Alejandro Rodriguez, Joanna Wright, Andy Agne, and the VORTEX Stage Managers.

Aerial performances by Sky Candy and Brass Ovaries.

Tarot Readings by Suzanne McAnna.

Live Music by Os Alquimistas, The Late Joys, The Mighty Renegades, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, Tyler Mabry, and Jo Beth Henderson.

Stay tuned for more details on the performers and schedule and some command performances that you won’t want to miss.

Admission is by donation to support VORTEX: Illuminate, our big fundraiser for a new lighting system for The VORTEX. We recommend at least $25 ($1 per year). Those donating $250 or more will be entered in a drawing for a night’s stay at the Austin Marriot downtown. There will also be a Silent Auction for fabulous goods and services from local businesses and artisans.

Our Business Partners for the Silent Auction include Chez Zee, Threadgills, Vulcan Video, Salty Sow, Hoovers Cooking, Eastside Café, Vivo, Things Celtic, El Chile, Quan Yin Center for Compassionate Healing, Ancient Mysteries, Natural Magic, Lainie Lamb, Z-Helene, Suzanne McAnna, Kimberley Mead, artists and artisans, and much more.

The VORTEX is funded and supported in part by VORTEX Repertory Company, a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts and in part by the City of Austin Economic Development Department/Cultural Arts Division believing an investment in the Arts is an investment in Austin’s future.
