butterfly barAt the Butterfly Bar at the Vortex, the little winged creatures dance around passion flowers planted around the outside deck. As decorations, they also adorn some of the walls inside the bar, all shapes and colors. Otherwise, said bartender Mark Vazquez, the theme is kept to a minimum.

The Vortex Repertory Co. has been a fixture in Austin theater for more than two decades, regularly producing performances on stage in the Vortex building on Manor Road. The bar didn’t come along until much later, when theatergoers would gather in the small space waiting for a show in the next room to begin. It grew to sell wine and beer, as well as snacks such as popcorn and pretzels, and now has a menu of specialty cocktails, which took a collaborative effort from the bar staff to figure out. The Butterfly Nectar, for example, took a few tries to get right, but the mixture of Tito’s Vodka, fruit and ginger goes down easy.

The Butterfly Bar has helped to attract East Austin residents who aren’t necessarily interested in seeing theater shows, but enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and patio seating, as well as the regular events like trivia on Tuesdays. “We get patrons now who like the easygoing vibe, how it’s like a community here,” Vazquez said. “This whole area is growing up, so it’s nice to be established already. The Vortex was around before a lot of the other places on Manor.”

radiusThat’s all thanks to Bonnie Cullum, the Vortex’s artistic director who built the Vortex company from the ground up. She also brought in the long wooden bar and the bottle-laden shelves behind it, two furniture pieces with quite a bit of history. If you’re ever there, sitting in one of the bar stools and waiting for a drink, you might see a bit of fur slink around your chair — meet the resident cat, Radius.

CULT CLASSICS- BB

Monday Movies at the Vortex

9 p.m. Monday. Free. The Butterfly Bar at the Vortex, 2307 Manor Rd. www.vortexrep.org.

Although watching a movie outdoors might seem like a sweaty activity in the summer, the Butterfly Bar at the Vortex has plenty of refreshing drinks to make Monday night movies there a July tradition. Up first is “Wet Hot American Summer,” a 2001 satirical comedy about one last day at a fictional Jewish summer camp in 1981. The other cult films playing throughout the month include “Brazil,” “Repo! The Genetic Opera,” “Bottle Rocket” and “Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
