The Butterfly Bar
The Butterfly Bar is owned and operated by The VORTEX, a 501(c)3 non-profit live theatre established in Austin in 1988. Drinks purchased at the bar support performing artists.
Our spacious outdoor garden is a nationally certified butterfly sanctuary. As an Austin Platinum Green Business, we uphold a zero waste policy with recycling and composting.
We are open seven nights a week in East Austin, where our inclusive space offers indoor and outdoor seating, live music, and performance art.
Over the years, we have been adopted by three cats: Radius, Elmire, and Smokey. You are likely to see them during your visit. The black kitties, Smokey and Elmire, both girls, are friendly and usually receptive to petting. Mr. Radius is an older gentleman with graying whiskers and generally prefers to keep to himself. (We suggest admiring Radius from a distance.)
The VORTEX was the first theatre to establish a home in Six Square, Austin’s Black Cultural District, and we are proud to partner with Six Square in working to preserve the cultural legacy of our neighborhood.

Parked in The VORTEX garden is a family-owned Italian food truck, Patrizi’s. With over 50 years of experience, chef Nic Patrizi brings delicious Italian food to Austin.
